In recent weeks, there has been a surge in fraudulent phone scams that are tricking people into compromising their personal information. These scams are often carried out via text messages that contain suspicious links, and they’re becoming increasingly sophisticated.
How the Scam Works
The most recent scam our customers are seeing begins with a text message that appears to be from Horicon Bank. The message claims there’s an urgent issue requiring your immediate attention, such as a held or locked account. Here’s the exact wording of a text a customer received:
“Horicon Bank: Your account has been placed on hold due to recent unusual activities. To fix this issue, please visit https://myhoriconmem.weebly.com to secure your account.”
The link provided in the message directs you to a fake website that mimics a legitimate site. Once there, you are prompted to enter sensitive personal information.
If you are receiving this message or a similar message claiming to be Horicon Bank (or another reputable source), think before you click. Or better yet, don’t click at all and call Horicon Bank directly at 888.343.3040.
As our customers continue to encounter these fraudsters, take a minute to brush up on your scam watching skills:
What red flags would you watch out for?
- Unsolicited Messages: Be skeptical of unexpected messages that urge you to act quickly or provide personal information.
- Suspicious Links: Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited texts. Instead, visit the official website directly by typing the URL into your browser or using a trusted app.
- Spelling and Grammar Errors: Many fraudulent messages contain spelling mistakes or poor grammar. Legitimate organizations typically maintain high standards in their communications.
- Urgent or Threatening Language: Scammers often use high-pressure tactics to create a sense of urgency or fear. Be cautious of messages that demand immediate action.
What should you do if you receive a suspicious message?
- Do Not Click Links: If you receive a message with a link that seems suspicious, do not click on it.
- Verify the Source: Contact the organization directly using a known phone number or official website to verify the legitimacy of the message. Do not use contact information provided in the suspicious message.
- Report the Scam: Report the fraudulent message to your mobile carrier and relevant authorities. This can help prevent others from being scammed.
- Update Your Security: If you’ve clicked on a suspicious link and entered your information, change your passwords immediately and monitor your accounts for any unauthorized activity.
Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics, so staying informed and cautious is your best defense. By recognizing the signs of a scam and knowing how to respond, you can protect your personal information and avoid falling victim to these deceitful schemes
