December is holiday season. On the heels of Thanksgiving this month chock full of special days like the feast of St. Nicholas, Hannukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, etc. These major holidays grab most of the headlines, but there is another one worth noting… Winter Solstice.
Thanks to Copernicus, we understand how the Earth revolves around and makes its annual tilts towards and away from the Sun. On December 21 each year, we observe the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere and summer solstice in the southern hemisphere. Here in Wisconsin that means it is the shortest day of the year, and the longest night.
In nature, winter solstice is important for plants and animals as it marks the beginning of lengthening days which cues a new beginning to annual cycles such as migrations, breeding seasons and more. It is also a great time for birdwatching as many northern migrants, like snowy owls, evening grosbeaks, and redpolls have returned to Wisconsin.
Throughout history the winter solstice has been celebrated around the globe. Notable examples include St. Lucia’s Day and the festival of lights in Scandinavia, Soyal celebrations of the Hopi Indians in Arizona, and Yalda night observances in the Persian region.
