The Hidden Migration

Fall migrations, justifiably, get a lot of attention. Each autumn our songbirds and shorebirds flee for sunny climates and waterfowl begin to stage in rest stops, such as Horicon Marsh. The spectacle of massive flocks of geese, swans, and ducks over the Marsh can get anyone’s pulse racing. But there is another, more subtle migration happening. That is the seasonal movements of frogs, toads, and other amphibians.

Autumn is not a time we typically think about frogs. But it is an active time for our web-footed friends as they prepare for the cold season ahead. Many species of frogs have a terrestrial portion of their lives in late summer and early fall. This helps them access additional foods and colonize new habitats. American toads, leopard frogs, spring peepers, and wood frogs are examples of amphibians that participate in this annual passage from forests and fields to ponds and lakes.

Once back in the water, most amphibians look for depths of over 3 feet and soft, mucky bottom to burrow into for insulation during the winter. One notable exception is the wood frog. These tough customers skip the water and instead hibernate under logs and leaves in the forest. To help survive these extremely chilly conditions, they have a special antifreeze in their cells which enables them to nearly freeze solid and withstand temperatures as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit for up to six months!
